چکیده

We show that the switchable mirror material YHx can be used both as an indicator to monitor and as an agent to control hydrogen diffusion in thin films. The applicability of the optical-indicator technique is demonstrated for VHx thin films. The diffusion coefficient is typically 10 25 cm/s at concentrations around 0.7 H/V at temperatures between 373 and 473 K. Deposition of a layer of Y on V makes it also possible to tune the effective hydrogen mobility via the V/Y thickness ratio. This can be used for investigation of hydrogen diffusion waves in laterally structured objects.

Effect of hydrogen-switchable mirrors on the Casimir force.

We present systematic measurements of the Casimir force between a gold-coated plate and a sphere coated with a hydrogen-switchable mirror. Hydrogen-switchable mirrors are shiny metals that can become transparent upon hydrogenation. Despite such a dramatic change of the optical properties of the sphere, we did not observe any significant decrease of the Casimir force after filling the experiment...

ANGLE-SCANNED PHOTOEMISSION ON YbHx: RELEVANCE FOR SWITCHABLE MIRRORS

Yttrium, lantanum and rare earth elements can be loaded with hydrogen inducing a metal–insulator transition and giving rise to optical switching from reflecting to transparent. We present angle-scanned photoemission experiments characterizing thin YbHx films grown on W(110) at room temperature. Hydrogen loading is performed in an ultrahigh-vacuum-compatible high pressure (1 bar) reaction cell. ...

Light-induced metal-insulator transition in a switchable mirror.

Rare earth hydride films can be converted reversibly from metallic mirrors to insulating windows simply by changing the surrounding hydrogen gas pressure at room temperature. At low temperatures, in situ doping is not possible in this way as hydrogen cannot diffuse. However, our finding of persistent photoconductivity under ultraviolet illumination offers an attractive possibility to tune yttri...

On the use of hydrogen switchable mirrors in Casimir force experiments

Hydrogen switchable mirrors (HSMs) are shiny metals that become optically transparent upon exposure to hydrogen. The Casimir force between HSMs is thus supposed to be stronger in air than in hydrogen. A few years ago, an experiment designed to measure this effect gave an unexpected result (Iannuzzi, Lisanti and Capasso 2004 Proc. Natl Acad. Sci. USA 101 4019–23): no change of the force was obse...

Quenching of Giant Hysteresis Effects in La12zYzHx Switchable Mirrors

The giant intrinsic hysteresis as a function of hydrogen concentration x in the optical and electrical properties of the archetypal switchable mirror YHx is eliminated by alloying Y with the chemically similar La. The La12zYzHx films with z # 0.67 are essentially hysteresis-free. The origin of the large hysteresis of alloys with z $ 0.86 is the large uniaxial lattice expansion that accompanies ...
